Glassy carbon manufacture using rapid photonic curing

Abstract Photonic curing was explored as a rapid method for producing glassy carbon coatings, reducing processing time from ~ 20 h conventional thermal down to 1 min. A resole-type thermoset polymer resin coated on steel foil used precursor, placed in nitrogen purged container and exposed high energy light (~ 27 J/cm 2 per pulse up pulses). Comparison samples were produced at 800 °C using route. For both photonic conventionally Raman spectroscopy primary peak XPS data showed sp bonded carbon, indicative of bulk carbon. This transformation evolved with increasing number pulses, therefore amount transferred the coating. The coatings resilient, highly smooth, no evidence surface defects. analysis indicated greater 3 content immediate (5–10 nm) cured compared thermally likely due local environment (temperature, atmosphere) around during conversion. ability rapidly manufacture provides new opportunities expand window applications carbons towards large-scale volume applications.
